Pets and COVID-19

At Lifeline Puppy Rescue, we are dedicated to the health and safety of our rescue animals and keeping the community educated with the latest health information. Here are some commonly asked questions about pets and the coronavirus (COVID-19):

Are my pets at risk of COVID-19?

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there is no evidence that pets can become infected or spread the human coronavirus (COVID-19).

What do I do with my pets if I get sick?

Keep your pets at home and follow good hygiene practices. Although you cannot infect your pet with COVID-19, the virus can live for many hours on surfaces including your pet’s fur. Wash your hands before and after interacting with your pet and wear a facemask.

How can I prepare my household to help my pet?

With any emergency, it is good to have a plan in place if you become ill and need to be hospitalized:

  • Have a designated person to care for your pet
  • 2-week supply of pet food
  • Any prescriptions or non-prescription medications for your pet with administration directions
  • Any crates or supplies to quickly move your pet
  • Updated ID tag on your pet’s collar and current microchip information

How can I help my pets?

As we cannot spread COVID-19 to our pets and vice versa, we can spend lots of quality time with our pets. According to the Human-Animal Bond Research Institution, pets and therapy animals can reduce psychological stress (fear and anxiety) and increase oxytocin levels. Pets will enjoy our attention and they can help us during this difficult time.

How can I help my community?

You can help your community by sharing this information so that they can be educated on COVID-19 in relation to pets and have an emergency plan ready for their pets too. You can also offer to be a caregiver to dogs of your friends, neighbors, and family in case they experience hospitalization or hardships.

How can I help rescue puppies?

There are still thousands of puppies at-risk of euthanasia that need our help. You can help Lifeline Rescue survive so that we can continue to save homeless puppies and provide them with loving families by Donating.

We also have many puppies at the rescue or in foster that will be in our care indefinitely. You can support these puppies until they are able to find forever families by giving to the Puppy Supporter Sponsorship
